Tips For Getting the Right Operating System
Which Operating System Should I Use? What is the Best Operating System?
The Differences between Linux, Windows, and Mac Systems in a Nutshell
What is an 'Operating System'?
An operating system is what your computer uses to run software on your computer, along with drivers that make your printer, sound, and other peripherals (other things you have attached to your computer) work.
If you search on the internet about any type of operating system, you will find several people who comment one way or another about what operating system is best. The real question is: what operating system is best for you?
Each operating system has different characteristics: some get along with each other's software and some do not---or steps must be taken so that software will run on Linux, Windows, or a Mac operating system.
Each type of operating system is also dependent on what's inside your computer. If your computer is older and all you want to do is email and a few other things, Linux can run "like the wind.
" If your computer (cpu for short meaning the "guts") has more memory (RAM) and more up-to-date motherboard, sound and video card, Windows and Macs might be your answer.
" Just as much dependent on what kind of computer you have, your needs with what you want to do on your computer have the most say in which operating system is best.
Choosing an Operating System in Simple Terms
Linux: Linux is an "open source" operating system which means, literally, it's free. Linux software developers are constantly updating and creating new software for Linux and that software is, for the most part, free as well.
Some of the advantages to a Linux operating system are:
- The operating system and majority of its software are free.
- A Linux operating system will run very well on older computers.
- Viruses and "blue screens of death" are virtually unheard of on a Linux operating system.
- Linux operating systems and software are customizable for businesses.
Some of the drawbacks to Linux operating system are:
- Most Windows programs will not run on a Linux system without other software (and Windows applications will run slower using most of this software).
- Many sound (or other) cards and drivers are not recognized by Linux.
- Linux can have a high learning curve but, for most people, Linux is an easier operating system to learn than Windows.
- Many graphics in applications in a Linux operating system look "old fashioned. "
Windows: Every version of Windows has had issues but Windows is the "staple" operating system for most individuals and businesses, although Linux is gaining ground.
Some of the benefits to a Windows operating system are:
- Most software and drivers are compatible with a Windows operating system.
- A Windows operating system can "see" and automatically install drivers.
- Windows is an operating system that other computers use for sharing information.
- Windows offers extensive forums and other help online for its users.
Some of the drawbacks to a Windows operating system are:
- Windows software can be expensive.
- Many Windows "versions" crash for unknown reasons.
- A Windows operating system often "forces" unwanted software upon installation.
- A Windows operating system has some "bloated" applications, and some are prone to viruses.
MacIntosh: A MacIntosh or "Mac" is made by Apple, Inc., not Microsoft Corporation. A Mac operating system has a lot to offer today and is compatible with many, if not most, Window's software and applications.
Some advantages to having a Mac operating system are:
- Stability. Macs are considered by many the most stable among operating systems.
- As an operating system, Macs have some of the best video, audio, and graphic editing capabilities. Thus, you will see most advertising agencies use Macs as their primary operating systems.
- A Mac operating system is very clean and rich in display and maintenance.
- A Mac operating system rarely, if ever, crashes.
Some of the drawbacks to owning a Mac operating system are:
- Support for printers and drivers can sometimes be difficult to get.
- Not all (yet) Windows software is compatible with a Mac operating system.
- A MacIntosh operating system is among the most expensive.
- A Mac operating system can be more expensive to do repairs on because many of their parts are 'proprietary' and need to be ordered as well.
