WiMax Bandwidth Speed Tests vs 3G

This was just posted on Gizmodo and its the first real WiMax speedtest I’ve seen. Let me cut the crap and get down to the results: 13 megabits/sec downstream and nearly 2 megabits/sec upstream! Oh, my, GOD! That’s faster than DSL – a wired connection! You would even be hard pressed to get the same downstream speeds on an 802.11G wireless connection.

But wait, there’s more (TV promo voice)! While WiMax works good when you’re idle in one spot, it works great while you’re on the move. Think about the possibilities of high speed internet while on the move. Sure, we can use our cell phones for internet, but I would hardly call it high speed. Even 3G speeds cannot compare, maxing out at around 2.2 megabits/sec downstream and 600kilobits/sec upstream at their best.

Carputer users will definitely benefit from this. An always on internet link could open up a world of possibilities regarding carputer integration. For example, one thing I always wanted to do was rig up my carputer to actually start my car from the internet. Tethering a cell phone for internet access was the only way to do that, until now. Or, you can rig up a sweet car alarm system, which will take a picture of the perpetrator and upload it to the internet. Even better, you could rig up a webcam (or multiple webcams) and access them from the internet to see what’s going on. As you can see, the possibilities are endless.
